Fellowship and Activities

If anything characterizes First Presbyterian it is the sense of family and fellowship which is found in all the activities which we do together.  From continuing groups within the congregation to special activities and gatherings, opportunities to commune with fellow members abound.  Some of these are displayed on this page, but it should be understood that everything that happens at First Presbyterian is seen as a chance to be with good friends and witness to the joy that comes from being in Spirit-led fellowship with others.

Helping One Another (Women's group) and the Men's Association are ongoing groups which meet monthly for bible study, fellowship, prayer, and programs.  Twice a year, they meet together for banquets with special guest speakers.

They both provide pools of willing hands (and money) to undertake special projects for the church.  Recently, for example, they re-landscaped the church front in preparation for the 50th anniversary celebration and provided funding for an Assisted Listening System in the sanctuary.

They also provide people and funding for many of the other activities of the church - the church picnic and the Peach Festival, for example.

Food and Fellowship - One Tuesday of every month, First Presbyterian serves lunch to anyone who enters our doors between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  Church members bring the food and beverages to the tables and bus the tables between sittings.  A free will offering plate is available.  50% of the money contributed goes to the local food bank and 50% goes to Presbyterian Hunger Relief Program.  We are currently serving between 90 and 100 meals per session.

Chicken Pies - Probably no activity characterizes First Presbyterian better than the January week devoted to making and selling chicken pies.  Using a recipe handed down from those who sold pies to fund the construction of the current building, over 100 people (members and non-members) cooperate to make and sell over 5000 chicken pies in 5 days.  It is a major source of funding for the church budget, but most of all it is an incredible multi-generational fellowship time.

Coffee Hour is held after communion and several other times during the year.  A special Salad Lunch at coffee hour time is held on Pentecost Sunday.  Always well attended (most of church attendees that Sunday stay for the fellowship) these informal gatherings illustrate the friendly family atmosphere of our congregation.

Each August, the church undertakes a fellowship activity, the annual Peach Festival, which includes an Auto Show, entertainment, food and peach pies and shortcake. Invitation flyers with free food coupons are distributed throughout the immediate neighborhood to encourage visits.

On Labor Day weekend each year, the HOA and Men's Association hold a Flea Market, selling everything from small household items to furniture donated by members and friends.  This is the major source of funding for the HOA and Men's Association activities.

In early July First Presbyterian holds its annual Church Picnic at nearby Cedar Creek Park.  The Men's Association provides meat and beverages and everyone who comes brings picnic food.  The day ends with an outdoor worship service at the river's edge, celebrating the bountiful goodness of our gracious God.

For over 50 years the churches of the Mon Valley have had a dartball league.  First Presbyterian was one of the founding members, and three of its members were recently recognized for 50 years of playing dartball.
